Fly to Nagpur and drive into the forests of Pench National Park — central India at its most untamed. A rolling carpet of long yellow grasses and teak forests, dominated by the Satpura Hills and the winding Pench River. Settle into your luxury tented camp. Twice-daily drives give you the best chance of spotting tigers, leopards, sloth bears, and jackals. An exquisite array of birdlife flits through the twisting teak forests — grey hornbills, paradise flycatchers, and troops of langurs swinging through the canopy. For an immersive experience of this great wilderness, spend the night in an open-air four-poster star bed — gazing at the cosmos from the safety of a mosquito net while listening to the chirps and calls of the forest.

Kipling's Jungle Book

Drive deeper into Madhya Pradesh to Kanha National Park — the mighty sal forests thought to have inspired Kipling's Jungle Book. In 1973, Kanha was among the first parks in India's Project Tiger conservation campaign, and it remains prime territory for spotting the elusive big cats. Striped hyenas, Indian pangolins, and the marsh-dwelling barasingha deer also call it home. Check into your luxury tented camp overlooking the Banjaar River.

Strike out on a walking safari along the Banjaar River Trail, where your naturalist reveals the dense flora and fauna thriving along the riverbanks. The excitement continues with another full day on safari. With help from an expert guide, you could spot tiger, leopard, langur monkey, Indian bison, wild dog, and the rare swamp deer. Morning and evening drives offer different lighting and animal behaviour — dawn brings the hunters, dusk brings the grazers to the water. A farewell dinner at camp beneath a canopy of stars.

Transfer to Bandhavgarh National Park, which sprawls beneath a grand 10th-century fort. Between sweeping grasslands and lush thickets of bamboo, watch for leopards lazing in the mouths of mysterious caves or tigers cooling off in secluded pools. Beyond the big cat encounters, there are wolves, sloth bears, mighty gaurs, plus hundreds of species of birds and butterflies. Check into your lodge — a rustic-chic homestead on the edge of the wilderness.
