Ideal Duration: Why 7 to 10 Days

Tour operators routinely sell the Golden Triangle as a five or six-day package. We advise against this. Five days means three cities in five days, which means two days of significant driving and three days of compressed sightseeing. You will see the monuments, but you will not experience them.

Our recommended pace is 7 to 10 days, structured as follows:

• Delhi: 2-3 nights. Enough to explore Old Delhi's Mughal heritage, discover the quieter tombs and gardens of New Delhi, enjoy at least one exceptional meal, and recover from jet lag in comfort.
• Agra: 2 nights. This allows for a sunrise visit to the Taj Mahal, an afternoon exploring Agra Fort, and a visit to the exquisite Itimad-ud-Daulah (the "Baby Taj") — all without rushing. An evening drink on the terrace of the Oberoi Amarvilas, with the Taj glowing in the distance, is non-negotiable.
• Jaipur: 3-4 nights. Jaipur is the richest city on the triangle for luxury travellers. Between the Amber Fort, City Palace, Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar, the old city bazaars, and the surrounding countryside, three nights feel generous and four feel perfect.

This pace leaves room for spontaneity — an unplanned afternoon browsing Jaipur's jewellery workshops, an extended conversation with a Sufi musician in Old Delhi, an early-morning yoga session in a palace garden. These unscripted moments are often the ones that stay with you longest.

Delhi — Where Your Journey Begins

Essential Experiences

Old Delhi by cycle rickshaw. The narrow lanes of Chandni Chowk are a sensory immersion unlike anything else on the circuit. With a knowledgeable guide, the chaos resolves into meaning — each lane specialising in a different trade, each mosque and temple carrying centuries of stories. Agra — The Taj Mahal and Beyond

Sunrise at the Taj Mahal. There is no more fitting way to experience the Taj than at first light, when the marble shifts from grey to pink to white as the sun clears the horizon. Arrive early, ideally with a private guide who can secure a favourable position and provide historical context that transforms what you see. The crowds will come, but for those first thirty minutes, the Taj belongs to the dawn.

Agra Fort. Often overshadowed by the Taj, the Red Fort of Agra is magnificent in its own right — a sprawling complex of palaces, mosques, and audience halls where the Mughal emperors held court.
